Charity at the Heart of Freemasonry.
Charity is a core principle of Freemasonry, woven into the fabric of everything we do. From the very beginning of their journey, every Freemason is encouraged to practice generosity—not only through financial support, but also by giving their time and energy to voluntary causes.
We believe in giving what we can, within our means, and always without compromising our responsibilities to our families or ourselves. Importantly, our charitable work is done quietly and without seeking recognition. Much of the impact Freemasonry has on society goes unnoticed by the public, but it is deeply felt by those who benefit from our support.
All funds we raise come from our members, often through internal events and social activities, not public fundraising. While we support fellow members and their families in times of need, we are equally committed to helping the wider community. Freemasonry is proud to be one of the largest charitable donors in the UK.
Our Commitment to Charity – Locally, Regionally, and Beyond
Freemasonry has a long-standing tradition of supporting those in need—both within our membership and across the wider community.
- At the local level, individual Lodges provide assistance to their own members and families when required, as well as to local individuals and community groups facing hardship or challenges.
- Regionally, the Provincial Grand Lodge of Cornwall makes a significant impact through larger charitable contributions. Each year, during our Charity Giving Day, the Provincial Grand Lodge—through the Cornwall Masonic Charitable Foundation—distributes over £50,000 to a wide range of non-Masonic charities, helping to support vital services and community initiatives throughout the county.
- Nationally and internationally, the United Grand Lodge of England extends this spirit of giving by supporting major charitable causes such as medical research, disaster relief, and international aid efforts, through the Masonic Charitable Foundation.
While Freemasonry itself is not a charity, it is deeply connected to charitable work through various dedicated foundations and funds. These organisations provide lifelong support—from youth to old age—not only to members, but also to countless individuals across society.
