The service, held in the magnificent setting of Exeter Cathedral, was a deeply moving tribute to those who served and sacrificed during the Second World War. Lodges from all three provinces were well represented, with many Brethren proudly wearing full Craft or Royal Arch regalia, and others in military dress. Provincial and Lodge banners were paraded with honour through the cathedral's historic nave.
The Dean of Exeter, the Very Reverend Jonathan Greener, who led much of the service, struck a warm and thoughtful note in his opening remarks. Wearing an intricately embroidered cassock, he quipped—while glancing at the regalia-clad assembly—that it might be the first time he felt underdressed in his own cathedral. His words set the tone for an emotional act of remembrance, honouring those who gave their lives.
Worshipful Brother Mike Pritchard, the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, represented Cornwall with great dignity, reading aloud the names of known Cornish Brethren who passed to the Grand Lodge Above during the conflict. He was joined by Right Worshipful Brother Nicholas Ball (Devonshire) and Right Worshipful Brother Raymond Guthrie (Somerset), each reading names from their respective Provinces.
The Lord Lieutenant of Devonshire recited Laurence Binyon’s immortal words from For the Fallen, followed by the Last Post.
Right Worshipful Brother David Medlock, Assistant Grand Master, representing the United Grand Lodge of England, read from the Gospel of St Matthew (Chapter 5, verses 2–9). Right Worshipful Brother Gareth Jones OBE, Past Assistant Grand Master and Third Grand Principal, representing Supreme Grand Chapter, shared poignant recollections from those who witnessed VE Day firsthand.
Cornwall’s own Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, WBro Simon Taylor, also played a prominent role as Grand Escort, in one of his final duties as Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies.
The unity and presence of so many Brethren and Companions from Cornwall and beyond imbued the service with great meaning, honouring the memory of the fallen while celebrating peace and fraternity. Photographs captured from the day reflect the reverence and splendour of the occasion.
